Travelling along the Tyrrhenian Coast
to the Madonie Mountains, one sets foot in the forge of a striking
landscape leading to Cefalu`. Cefalu` takes its name form the
overhanging head shaped rock standing out against a blue-green sea.
It is a picturesque town with twisting stepped lanes, and boasts the
magnificent beach at Presidiana with agreeable restaurants
overlooking a rocky coast.
A tour of Cefalu` must indeed begin from Piazza del Duomo. Cefalu`
is renowned for its Cathedral which is one of the greatest churches
of Southern Europe. The Cathedral was built on the request of Roger
II, according to legend as fulfilment of a vow made when he survived
a tempest and landed at Cefalu`. In visiting this masterpiece, one
can ponder the optical illusion produced by the towers which seem to
converge, thus giving the church a fascinating and worrisome
appearance.
Cefalu`’s mountains are another point of interest. A pleasant climb
offers a splendid panorama, reaching an ideal spot for enjoying an
inspiring view form the Madonie to Mt.Etna. It is an ideal spot for
enjoying a peaceful stroll along the stunning beauty of green
forests, heading through the road winding over the bare hills of the
highland until reaching the Madonie towns still immersed in an
agrarian and pastoral existence. Walking about the massif of the
Madonie, one can appreciate the ruins of a large fortress. The
natural beauty and the excellent climate of the mountains in this
area, give a unique opportunity that is only possible here in
Cefalu`. |
